Seattle Rock n Roll half marathon

Time to rise and shine
Grab your gear and pick up friends
Find some coffee, stat

Thousands get in line
Downtown, Pike Place, viaduct
Run past all the views

Push yourself harder
Rock n Roll half marathon
End with friends and beer

Vaseline, not Gu

You know, I’ve run a number of races with friends but I’ve never had a friend who wasn’t running meet me at the finish line… until tomorrow.

About 9 or 10 years ago, when I was a larger non runner, I waited for my dear friend Ivan Kaplan at the finish line of the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C. If someone had told me that ten years and 3000 miles later, the roles would be reversed, I would have said they were drunk.

That said, I will never forget the biggest mistake he made that race and pray to God I never do it myself. Pretty sure I won’t. Ivan is one of those friends everyone needs to make sure life never gets too serious.

Avoid this mistake
Do not put that in your mouth
Vaseline, not Gu

Yes, he really did that – and still ran it in 3:04.

Let’s rock and roll, bitch

My sometimes running partner, lifelong friend, and always comedienne, Linda Bang, has been cheering me on through taper week leading up to Seattle’s Rock n Roll half marathon on Saturday. She is the author and guest contributor of today’s haiku.

Shit. Two days remain
Thirteen miles to finish
Let’s rock and roll, bitch
